ROBIN HOOD, PRINCE OF THE THIEVES

(1991)

This movie, directed by Kevin Reynolds in 1991, relates Robin Hood's adventures (Kevin Costner), back to England, after fighting during the Crusades, after a quarrel with his father. During his escape from a prison in the Holy Land, Robin of Locksley saved a Maur, Azeem (Morgan Freeman), who swore to do the same for Robin. So, he went with him in England to help Robin. However, during his abscence, the sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) killed Robin's father to take his land. After his return and when he learnt what happened, Robin went at Marian's (Mary-Elizabeth Mastrantonio), a childhood friend who was related to the King Richard Lionheart, to find a refuge but she didn't want to have problems with the sheriff. However, she decided to help him unofficially. After fighting with sheriff's men, Robin became outlaw. He left in the Sherwood forest, where he led a group of villagers, who fled their village because of the sheriff. This one, according to his witch, called for the Celts to get rid of the villagers, and of Robin at the same time. He abducted Marian too, to marry her, and to be with that marriage, a member of the royal family, and to become king if Richard didn't come back from the Crusades. After appearing as dead, Robin Hood, helped by his friends, succeeded to free the prisoners who must be hung the day of the sheriff marriage. After having quickly marry Marian, the sheriff has been disturbed by Robin, who appeared suddenly in the room to free his beloved. They fought and the sheriff George of Nottingham died. Then, Robin and Marian get married in the Sherwood forest, with the King Richard (Sean Connery) blessing.

This film is a very good action, love and adventure movie, in which Alan is really great in the sheriff George role. His character is really funny and not so evil, as we see during his marriage with Marian, when he wanted a true marriage, contrary to the witch wishes. I recommend to you the DVD collector edition because in it, there are 12 minutes added, with mainly sheriff scenes, an interview of Alan, and the making-of :)
